Those
more observant may have noticed something strange in Newport during
the last month or so, that is those of us who walk around observing
changes in our surroundings. The appearance of Welsh Flags around
the Town. The first was noted by the Argos in February, who stated
that a wartime joker nicknamed Dapper Dan whose blackout exploits
involved hoisting flags around Newport on prominent buildings was
on the prowl again when a Large Welsh Flag appeared overnight atop
the dome of the old Art College. Since then more sightings have
been recorded including Motorway bridges, Capones and even the Texaco
garage on Chepstow Road. When questioned the Council had no record
of this sudden burst of patriotism. I find it hard to believe that
it can be the same Dapper Dan from nearly sixties years ago (have
you had a good look at the Art College Dome) the youngest he could
be is maybe 75 years old, or, has Dan died recently having returned
as a ghostly image to carry on with his patriotic task?
